DC Restaurant Week Winter 2009

Posted by Mike Bober, Jan 23, 2009

It's back!

DC Restaurant Week will return for its annual winter installment next month, pushed back a few weeks so as not to fall during the week of the inauguration.  From Monday, February 16th through Sunday, February 22nd, DC Foodies will be able to enjoy this season's special meal deals.

For those of you new to the D.C. Metro area who are unfamiliar with what DC Restaurant Week is, here's a brief summary. DC Restaurant Week occurs twice a year during the slow restaurant season in the winter (usually January) and the late summer (usually August). During this time, participating restaurants (this is key because not ALL restaurants participate in the program) will offer lunch for $20.09 or dinner for $35.09. Some restaurants will offer their full menu while others will have a special Restaurant Week menu.

Choosing restaurants to visit can be a complex decision as some restaurants do Restaurant Week very well and others just phone it in. I encourage people to do a search for past DC Restaurant Week posts on this web site where people have written comments about their experiences at different restaurants when deciding on where to dine. Here are some brief pointers to use when choosing restaurants:

  1. Avoid "special" menus unless you know exactly what the restaurant is offering and it actually sounds interesting to you. Restaurants offering mos - or ideally all - of their normal menu are the restaurants to go to, as these are the best deals.
  2. Confirm with the restaurant when making a reservation that they are in fact participating in D.C. Restaurant Week.
  3. When choosing a restaurant, consider whether or not they always have a deal similar to the Restaurant Week offer. For instance, Cafe Atlantico always has a pre-theater prix-fixe menu.
  4. Some restaurants (as you can see in our previous menu lists below) participate in D.C. Restaurant Week for extended periods - sometimes as long as the entire month!  You might want to consider booking reservations at those restaurants outside the main Restaurant Week period. For most participating restaurants, D.C. Restaurant Weeks are the busiest times of the year, so they are likely to be crowded.

To simplify the process for people every six months, the D.C. Foodies writers compile a list of Restaurant Week menus for all of the participating restaurants and for a comprehensive map of the 170+ restaurants taking part this year, check out Capital Spice.

Take a look back at some of our previous posts while we start collecting menus from the participating restaurants.  This year we'll be posting updates every few days, so keep checking in to see if your restaurants have revealed their plans!

City Girl

Great tips!

Laura

Do you know if any restaurants in Virginia will be participating?

Mike Bober

Thanks, City Girl!

Laura - There are definitely restaurants participating throughout Arlington, Alexandria, and Falls Church, as well as some others even farther afield.

You may want to click on the link to Capital Spice in the post - it will take you to a map that lays out all of the participating restaurants, including those in Virginia.

You may also want to look into Alexandria's Inaugural Restaurant Week, which is going on through Sunday. It's like this, but specific to Alexandria and features 30 restaurants in Old Town and the surrounding area.

Karen Loeschner

Willow Restaurant in Arlington is participating. They're finalizing their menu as we speak and will extend the offer beyond Restaurant Week.

http://www.willowva.com/

Reuben

Farrah Olivia appears to be extending RW for the entire month of February. See the Events section of their website (menu also posted)

maggie

Thanks for all the menus. I just made a reservation for Taberna and Black Salt. Agraria also has their menu up:
http://www.agrariarestaurant.com/

Reuben

Chef Geoff's has their full menu offered:
http://www.chefgeoff.com/main/index.cfm?Restaurant=main&Category=Events&Section=RAMW_RW_2009

Reuben

Bistro Bis and Vidalia have their RW menus up on their sites under "Other Menus." Nearly half the menu on Bistro Bis has upcharges though :(

Sara

I heard Il Mulino is extending theirs for the entire month, is this true?

Kimberly

PS7's is also extending thier restaurant week through Feb. 28.

JoeN [WeeklyDinner]

Sara: Yup, I've confirmed that Il Mulino is offering RW the entire month of Feb, with the exception of Valentine's Day itself.

Reuben

so um... updates please? At least incorporate the comment additions into the main post so it can be read easier?
:-)

Mike Bober

Sorry about that, Reuben. Updates are my responsibility and I've been a bit distracted this week (started a new job on Monday).

I promise I'll do a thorough update tonight and put up a post tomorrow morning letting everyone know what has been added.

Again - sorry for the delay.

Reuben

No worries :-) I think I'm just getting all anxious the closer it gets. lol

I haven't seen anything officially posted, but according to the Amex concierge who got us reservations there, Adour is extending if for one week.

Reuben

Edit:
Confirmed, spoke to the host at Adour. RW is extended there for a week.

Christina

Just found out while trying to make a reservation that Adour is extending their Restaurant Week for one week, through February 27. That's exciting, especially since they are already full up on reservations for the official dates.

Mike Bober

Thanks, Reuben. I'll add it to the list today, along with the recently-received updates from Nage and Liberty Tavern.

ryan

ate at il mulino tonight and we had a great time. regardless of whether you order off the restaurant week menu, you still get the same amazing service and free appetizers (well, multiple amuse bouche might be more appropriate). anyway, you have to request the restaurant week menu, but don't bother to do so until they present you with the regular menu, which won't happen until you've been there at least 20 mins.

Carol

Does anyone know what Equinox usually does for their RW menu? I have a reservation for Poste and Equinox and am trying to decide between the two, but Equinox seems to update their menu every week. Any idea if they offer their entire menu for RW?

?

Any idea what PS7's menu is?

Rachel

Opentable has Willow listed as offering both lunch and dinner but you have it labeled as dinner only-- any idea why there is a difference?

Reuben

Willow has a lunch menu posted as well:
http://www.willowva.com/documents/RWWinter2009-LUNCH.pdf

they ARE doing lunch (perhaps this menu was posted after this update)

Josh Novikoff

Mio has Lunch and Dinner menus posted. Looks like they're offering about 4 things each course from their regular menu.

And they have extended 1 week.

Lillian

The Palm Restaurant emailed me the menus copied below in response to my request re Restaurant Week. Thanks.

Amy

We had dinner tonight at Equinox: they had a nice menu, 3 choices for each course. The fish & lamb were fantastic! Service was slow. Worth it!

Amy

Jen

Had dinner at Oval Room last night. Was not impressed, most unremarkable meal that I can recall and the wines are overpriced! Sad because it's so highly rated, I think they just fall short during restaurant week, or I just don't get it. Either way, I won't go back.

BB

Has anyone been to Art and Soul this week or heard what their RW menu is?

Reuben

Wasn't too crazy about Equinox (although my girlfriend really liked it).

Went to lunch at BlackSalt earlier today though and it was FANTASTIC. Highly recommend it if you haven't been yet.

Tabard Inn also had a really nice menu

Reuben

oh, at BlackSalt I had the Calamari and the Seafood Stew. The Stew was AMAZING. Really fresh and flavorful. Had the chocolate truffle cake for desert.
