Foodie To-Do List: Upcoming Holidays, Restaurant-Style

Posted by Mike Bober, Apr 08, 2009

Todo As part of an ongoing effort to alert you, the readers of DC Foodies, to all of the really cool food-related events, classes and opportunities throughout the Washington Metropolitan area, we give you this week's edition of the Foodie To-Do List.

Each Wednesday, we give you a heads-up on a few of the upcoming events that we think look particularly interesting.  This week, we've got:

Matzo to Mexican at Rosa Mexicano this Weekend:

What:
Tired of the same old Passover dishes?  Then head down to Rosa Mexicano on Saturday for a demonstration of a Mexican-inflected menu that includes ancho chiles stuffed with slow-cooked veal shoulder and mole verde and a chicken-matzo ball soup with cilantro matzo balls.

When:
Saturday, April 11th, 10 AM

Where:
Rosa Mexicano
575 7th Street, NW (entrance on F Street across from Verizon Center)
Call 202-654-7010 for reservations

Why:
An opportunity to add some unexpected flavor to your Passover repertoire (or just to learn some fun new dishes if you don't celebrate Passover)

Cost:
FREE with a box of matzo, $35 without

For more information, check out Rosa Mexicano's website.

Celebrate Songkran at Wat Thai Monastery in Silver Spring:

What:
The traditional Thai New Year takes place from April 13th to April 15th every year.  To usher in the new year, the Wat Thai Buddhist monastery opens its doors to members and guests for a day of Thai food, music, dance and religious rituals.

When:
Sunday, April 12th, 7 AM - 3 PM (vendors open at 9 AM; music & dance show starts at 1:30 PM)

Where:
Wat Thai Washington
13440 Layhill Road
Silver Spring, MD
(Shuttles will run from the Glenmont Metro station throughout the day)

Why:
Washington definitely has its share of good Thai restaurants, but the opportunity to enjoy traditional Thai foods on the monastery grounds is not to be missed.  Celebrate the arrival of the year 2552 in style!

Cost:
FREE, but bring cash for food and merchandise

Visit the monastery online for more information.

Earth Day the Easy Way On the Patio at Poste

What:
Take a moment to appreciate the environment in one of the most relaxing environments downtown.  Enjoy cocktails and food off the bar menu as Poste opens its outdoor seating area for the season.

When:
Wednesday, April 22nd - bar opens at 11:30 AM

Where:
Poste Modern Brasserie
555 8th Street, NW

Why:
Fresh, local ingredients and a commitment to sustainability inform all of Chef Robert Weland's cooking; his patio garden turns out great produce that is used in cocktails and dishes throughout the season.  It makes sense that Earth Day should be opening day for them.  Rumor has it that Poste is expanding its patio program this summer, making it even easier to enjoy the warm weather and the great food and drinks simultaneously.

Cost:
Signature cocktails, $11; Bar menu items generally run ~$15 each

For a full menu and more details, check out Poste's website.
