About D.C. Foodies

What's D.C. Foodies all about? D.C. Foodies is a place where people can read about my adventures in dining in the D.C. metro region. This web site provides information about food events, new restaurant openings, and the latest restaurants that I've eaten at.

People always ask, "Jason, are you a food critic?" to which I answer -- NO! I'm not a professional food critic! I consider myself a "foodie."

A foodie is defined as "a person who has an ardent or refined interest in food." Recently, I believe that the term "foodie" has taken on a more connotative definition of "food snob" or a certain assumed level of elitism, which is easy to understand because people can be just as emotional and opinionated about food as they are about politics or religion. I'm looking to change that stereotype with this web site and open the foodie world up to everyone who loves food.

I don't claim to know everything about food -- I've never attended any cooking school or taken a class on food or animal sciences. My full-time job actually has NOTHING to do with food (except that I eat out most of the time for lunch). When I go to a fine dining establishment like Citronelle or Komi, I have to look up half the terms on the menu. The most-used book in my library is the New Food Lover's Companion, which is a book of definitions of food, drink and culinary terms.

So I'm sure that right about now you're probably asking, "So why should we listen to you, Jason?" Well, quite honestly, you probably shouldn't, but I will say this -- everytime I visit a restaurant, I try to learn something and try something new. I'm constantly trying to educate myself about new food and drink terms and trends. I eat out all the time and it's through all this eating out that I've gained a good amount of insight on restaurants and how to compare them. When it comes down to it though, this web site and the writings on it are my opinions and impressions when I eat at a restaurant.

I'm not always right -- I'll never claim to be. But everyone's opinion is valid, no matter how little experience they have in the culinary world. And I welcome people to leave comments on my restaurant reviews with the experiences that they've had at the same places.

So all of that aside, I hope that you'll join me in my journey through the D.C. restaurant and food scene. Happy eating!
