Restaurant Week If you haven't made your restaurant week reservations by now, you have no one but yourself to blame.  Even so, there are still some choice reservations out there...and there are plenty of restaurants that have chosen to extend their offering through the end of the month.

By now, most of the restaurants that are going to make their menus available ahead of time have already done so.  If you haven't been checking back at our original post, you should definitely take a look to see what we've got.

Restaurant Week Updates: Have You Made Your Reservations Yet?

Restaurant Week  With ten days to go before the start of Restaurant Week (February 16th), many of the participating restaurants are publicizing their menus, with the caveat that menus can change based on the availability of ingredients.

But some of the most sought-after establishments have made it clear that they won't be able to publish their menus until after Valentine's Day, at which point they will serve more as coming attractions for those who already have reservations than as enticements for those who were thinking about checking them out.

And that's really the classic conflict that we all face as we approach Restaurant Week.  Do we lock in the most in-demand reservations early, hoping that we don't end up with menu options that leave us underwhelmed?  Or do we go with places that announce their menus as soon as the dates are up, foregoing the risk in favor of something we can count on?

We've been busy gathering menus over the past week - and we want to thank those of you who have helped by posting comments at our original post letting us know what you've found.

If you haven't already done so, we would highly recommend you think about making reservations soon.  And if your top choices haven't posted their menus yet, look back through our archives to see what they've offered in the past.  It's usually a good indication of how they'll play things this time around.

We're really pleased to see how many restaurants are extending their deals - some have started already, and others will be stretching Restaurant Week all the way through the end of the month.  So if you can't get your coveted reservation during the official week, you may still be able to take advantage the week after.

Restaurant Week: The Wait Is Over, The Menus Have Started to Come In

Restaurant Week As promised, this year we're working to put up menus and other updates on Restaurant Week as soon as we get them so that you can make an informed decision about where to spend your dining dollars.  You'll be able to find all the updates in our original DC Restaurant Week post, so keep checking back there to see what's new.

We'll also be putting up regular notes like this one to let you know about what we're finding.  After all...knowing is half the battle.

One of the positive things we've found so far this year is the number of restaurants that are planning to extend their Restaurant Week promotions beyond the week of the 16th to the 22nd.  We've already got a list of a dozen restaurants that will allow you to take advantage of their RW deals the following week, as well.  Plan accordingly!

DC Restaurant Week Winter 2009

It's back!

DC Restaurant Week will return for its annual winter installment next month, pushed back a few weeks so as not to fall during the week of the inauguration.  From Monday, February 16th through Sunday, February 22nd, DC Foodies will be able to enjoy this season's special meal deals. 

For those of you new to the D.C. Metro area who are unfamiliar with what DC Restaurant Week is, here's a brief summary. DC Restaurant Week occurs twice a year during the slow restaurant season in the winter (usually January) and the late summer (usually August). During this time, participating restaurants (this is key because not ALL restaurants participate in the program) will offer lunch for $20.09 or dinner for $35.09. Some restaurants will offer their full menu while others will have a special Restaurant Week menu.

Choosing restaurants to visit can be a complex decision as some restaurants do Restaurant Week very well and others just phone it in. I encourage people to do a search for past DC Restaurant Week posts on this web site where people have written comments about their experiences at different restaurants when deciding on where to dine. Here are some brief pointers to use when choosing restaurants:

  1. Avoid "special" menus unless you know exactly what the restaurant is offering and it actually sounds interesting to you. Restaurants offering mos - or ideally all - of their normal menu are the restaurants to go to, as these are the best deals.
  2. Confirm with the restaurant when making a reservation that they are in fact participating in D.C. Restaurant Week.
  3. When choosing a restaurant, consider whether or not they always have a deal similar to the Restaurant Week offer. For instance, Cafe Atlantico always has a pre-theater prix-fixe menu.
  4. Some restaurants (as you can see in our previous menu lists below) participate in D.C. Restaurant Week for extended periods - sometimes as long as the entire month!  You might want to consider booking reservations at those restaurants outside the main Restaurant Week period. For most participating restaurants, D.C. Restaurant Weeks are the busiest times of the year, so they are likely to be crowded.

Take a look back at some of our previous posts while we start collecting menus from the participating restaurants.  This year we'll be posting updates every few days, so keep checking in to see if your restaurants have revealed their plans!

Vidalia's menus are available on their website: Under "Menus" click on "Other Menus."  They are offering a unique take on dinner: create your own three-course tasting menu from four courses' worth of selections for $35.09, or splurge for a five-course menu for $50.09.  The entire table must choose the same menu if the five-course option is selected.

They will be extending their Restaurant Week offering through August 20th, and they have indicated that the Restaurant Week menu will be the only thing they offer during this time frame.  When their regular menu is available, they have four different three-course chocolate menus for $20 each.

DC Coast - Lunch and Dinner - Reservations
As it has in the past, DC Coast is continuing its tradition of offering its entire menu of entrees (with one or two possible upcharges) and a selection of 7 or 8 appetizers and 3 desserts yet to be determined.

Del Merei Grill - Lunch and Dinner - Reservations
This Del Ray destination is offering a lunch menu that features soup, salad, or deviled eggs for an appetizer, a choice of any sandwich with chips, fries or tater tots, and a strawberry shortcake, glazed donut, or carrot cake for dessert.  Their dinner menu will offer the same appetizers and desserts along with a choice of beef tournedos and fried oysters, cedar planked salmon, or Del Merei sirloin as your entree. Both meals will start with their 'frickles' (fried pickle chips).

Dino - Dinner - Reservations
Dino continues to go above and beyond with their restaurant week offerings.  Not only are they offering their RW menu for the entire month of August, they are offering their entire menu with only one upcharge ($12 for the Bistecca Fiorentina).  They also give you the option of substituting any appetizer up to $8 or any two cheeses for the dessert course, and they will be offering a complimentary glass of dessert wine, grappa, or limoncello as part of the $35.08 meal. They are also  still offering Wine Madness (33% off wines $50 a bottle or more) on Sunday and Mondays in August, but there will be no free corkage the week of August 11 thru 17.

Dish + Drinks - Lunch and Dinner - Reservations
The restaurant in the River Inn on 25th Street will be offering your choice of three appetizers, three entrees and three desserts at both lunch and dinner.  Soup of the day, Dish Pasta, an apricot and currant bread pudding and other dishes will appear on both menus, but their will be some variation between lunch and dinner.

District Chophouse & Brewery - Lunch and Dinner - Reservations
The Chophouse's Restaurant Week menus should be available on their site by Monday afternoon - keep an eye out!

District Grill - Lunch and Dinner - Reservations
Stay tuned for their Restaurant Week menus, which are expected by Monday afternoon.

Domaso Trattoria - Lunch and Dinner - Reservations
Domaso will be offering selections from their standard menus' appetizers and entrees, though they have not yet posted the exact list.  They will also be participating in Restaurant Week on Sunday the 17th with a $20.08 brunch menu.

El Manantial - Lunch and Dinner
This French, Italian and Spanish fusion establishment in Reston will be offering a choice between soup, salad and calamari for appetizers, four entrees that vary between lunch and dinner, and tres leches cake or creme caramel for dessert.  They should be posting the menus to their website this weekend.

Enology Wine Bar - Dinner
While most restaurants are restricting their guests to three courses with no alcohol included, Enology allows your to choose from one wine flight to enjoy throughout your meal, one item from the salad and cheese course, one flatbread, and select a plate of three chocolates.

For those of you who've been emailing us asking, no, pleading for us to tell you the dates for the Summer/August DC Restaurant Week, we seriously haven't been ignoring you. It's really because we didn't know until now the exact dates when it will be. This week however, I got an email from Chef Geoff's saying that it was August 11th through the 17th. Now, the WashingtonDC.org web site still hasn't announced the official dates, so you might want to take this with a grain of salt.

Of course, DCFoodies.com will be posting menus for DC Restaurant Week as always so check back in late July for the complete list, or check out the menus from past Restaurant Weeks if you want to make a reservation now.

Dino remains a standout among DC Restaurant Week participants - they will be offering their entire menu at the Restaurant Week price for the entire month of January (with a few upcharges).  From their website, it appears Wine Madness (33% off all wines $50 and over on Sundays and Mondays) will remain in effect, though several of their other deals - including a $24 three-course menu della serra that is normally offered Sunday through Thursday until 7 PM - will not be offered from the 14th to the 31st.

Chef Morou Ouattara's recent appearance on the Food Network's "The Next Iron Chef" has raised his already high profile even higher, and reservations for Restaurant Week proper have gone quickly.  However, Farrah Olivia will be offering their Restaurant Week special through the end of the month, so you may still be able to make a reservation to try Morou's unique fusion cuisine at Restaurant Week prices.  Their menus can be found under the "Events" section of their website (which is Flash-driven so we can't link directly to the menu).

Another restaurant taking full advantage of the chance to show off the full range of their cuisine, Finemondo will offer their entire menu (with a few upcharges).  Finemondo is only open for lunch Monday through Friday and dinner Monday through Saturday.  They are not accepting reservations via OpenTable (unlike most participating restaurants), so you will need to call them at (202) 737-3100.

As they have in the past, Georgia Brown's is extending their DC Restaurant Week participation through January 25th, though it should be noted that they are only participating during dinner hours.  Their Restaurant Week menu can be found on their website. 

Gerard's Place - also known as Gerard Pangaud Bistro

Although Gerard Pangaud Bistro is to be applauded for participating in the first Restaurant Week following Pangaud's return to the kitchen (after a year as an instructor at L'Academie de Cuisine), several of their menu offerings seem to miss the point of DC Restaurant Week.  Looking over the menus, you will find an upcharge of $12 for one of the entrees offered at lunch (a 60% increase in the price of the two-course meal).  Selecting the priciest menu item for each course at dinner would carry upcharges of $13.50, $13, and $14, respectively - for a total upcharge of $40.50 on a meal with an initial price of $30.08.  That being said, their menus offer quite a few options at the standard DC Restaurant Week prices as well, and most of them look delicious.

is an offshoot of the famous West Village restaurant in New York City, and they are among the more expensive Italian restaurants in Washington.  Restaurant Week offers a great chance to check out their menu, and they are extending their offering throughout the month of January.  They will be offering a mixed greens or Caesar salad for starters; a choice of pappardelle pasta with sausage, veal Marsala, chicken fra diavolo, or salmon with porcini mushrooms for entrees; and tiramisu or cheesecake for dessert.  There are no upcharges on any of their offerings.  Guests who don't want to participate in the Restaurant Week promotion can also order from the a la carte menu.

Jaleo - Bethesda, Crystal City, Downtown
For DC Restaurant Week, Jaleo is giving you the choice of 1 cold tapa, 1 seasonal tapa, and 1 hot tapa, which isn't exactly the best deal, but their web site says they're extending their offering through the 25th of August.

Kaz Sushi Bistro

La Tasca
Every Wednesday, La Tasca offers an unlimited tapas menu. The select menu offers a variety of tapas including dessert and La Tasca is offering for the entire week of DC Restaurant Week. Unlimited sangria will also be available for $10 a person. Here's there menu for the week.

Like it's sister restaurant, Jaleo, Oyamel is extending Restaurant Week until the 25th. Their menu is not on their web site though.

Perry's
Perry's is offering most of their normal menu with a few surcharges. Although, I went to Perry's last DC Restaurant Week, and I thought that they had cut back on the portion sizes. Hopefully they don't do the same thing this time.

Petit Plats
Petit Plats' lunch and dinner menu for DC Restaurant Week are the same and they're extending the offer through August 25th for the whole month of August. Petit Plats will be closed for lunch Monday through Friday, from the 13th through the 31st of August.
